More new avian visitors to the garden today: this time a group of three mallards on the pond (two males and a female).

Mallards on the pond Our cat was rather nonplussed when she stalked them to within a few feet and they simply moved to the other side of the pond and fixed her with three pairs of beady eyes. She seemed rather disconcerted and retreated indoors! We watched them for a while and I approached to within ten feet or so to get the picture. They were upending in the pond and feeding. I put some new marginal plants in last night and I was a bit concerned about the way the ducks were churning everything up, so reluctantly I chased them away.

First the heron and now the mallards: I never imagined when I made the pond, in large part for the birds benefit, that I would spend so much time chasing them away!
